The year has barely begun, and it already feels “odd” in terms of weather conditions. There has been a dividing line down the center of the country in temperatures…warm west…cold east leaving the plains dry from Canada to Texas. Here in NW IA our early snow cover melted away and recent snow events occurred south and east of the corn belt. That leaves us in what they are calling a “snow drought”. We have zero snow cover here in NW IA in mid-February so it feels like a drought. There is still time for a blizzard but it is quickly running out. Frankly, if temps would warm a little more to remove frost it would feel like we should get the planters ready. The only thing holding them back would be crop insurance dates. Early planted crops are tough to kill. 2025 was just such an example. I couldn’t help but note how the dryest soils lie over the Ogallala. Drawdown of the Ogallala aquifer is so serious that restrictions in SW KS are being considered that would require them to reduce their water usage by 27% this year.
