SPECIAL REPORT David Kruse Many farmers have bought into the narrative that the slump that crop farmers are experiencing is short term pain for long term gain. Ultimately that should be how it works out but the time spent in the slump is likely to last longer than many perceive that it will. Certain things have to happen before the Ag sector feels good again. We are in the valley and can only yet imagine what the promised land looks like. We have to keep moving forward until the ground we are standing on starts to rise in elevation again. Only then will we get to see the next view of a promised land. Changing metaphors…we are in a wagon train moving forward and the terrain is rough. Not every wagon is going to make it. Some will break down and others will just tire and quit; economists call this “industry or sector consolidation”. That is a nice way of saying that not everyone is going to get there. Many operations are going to be absorbed by others during the trip. Farms will continue to get larger as they always have. Decisions made previously will determine who will succeed but…
