We received some nice rains last week on our farm, as did most everyone else. Rainfall eases up later this week for most of the Corn Belt. We still have one missing ingredient – and that is heat. Temperatures have remained below average the last ten days, slowing plant growth but that will soon change. 80+ degree temperatures are expected to arrive this weekend and that will give the crops all they need to take off. If the heat continues, you can forget knee-high by the fourth of July, I am looking for chest-high by Independence Day. Scattered showers return next week for much of Iowa and the Western Corn Belt. I will be headed out to Nebraska later this week where they have missed most of the rainfall up until this point. If they can wait a bit longer, they are set to receive 2″ – 3″ in most areas next week. Short term forecasts in the Midwest are favorable, and the season seems to be off to a great start. The month of June leans drier but still provides adequate precipitation. Moisture demand is still low at this point and won’t become critical until July/August. While early…
